Data Seeding with Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance

In case you have a Wasabi storage account, you can order a portable solution called Wasabi Ball to make an initial full backup.

What Is Wasabi Ball

Wasabi Ball is not applicable for MSP30 storage powered by Wasabi

A Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance is a 100-TB data transfer solution that lets you move large datasets to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage quickly, conveniently, and cost-effectively. The Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance is ideal for customers that don’t have sufficient network connection speeds to transfer large amounts of storage over the Internet or private network connections.

Wasabi Ball makes it easy to move terabytes of data to the cloud. Order a Wasabi Ball device, make an initial full backup(or several backups) and return it to Wasabi. Each Wasabi Ball can securely store up to 100 TB of data.

Follow the steps below to create initial full backup (or multiple backups) data from your network infrastructure to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage using Management Console and Backup Agent along with Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance.

Order Wasabi Ball

To order Wasabi ball Transfer Appliance, place your order to sales@wasabi.com.

Make Initial Full Backups to Wasabi Ball

Configure Wasabi Ball

Before using Wasabi Ball, connect Wasabi Ball to power supply network and turn it on.

Note that each Wasabi ball supports the following interfaces:

  • Multiple 1 GbE & 10 GbE LAN interfaces supporting DHCP, static, and VLAN IP configurations
  • Standard file system interfaces (NFS, CIFS, SMB, FTP, HTTPS)

Select an appropriate interface, and plug Wasabi Ball into your network

For more information, refer to Wasabi Ball documentation.

Create Local Backup Plan for Wasabi Ball

Add Wasabi Ball as a local storage account. To do this, proceed as follows:

Note that local backup must be enabled in Global Agent Options

  1. Run Backup Agent.
  2. In the application menu, select Add Storage Account.
  3. In the File System Account dialog box, in the Display Name field, specify the storage name, and in the Path field, specify the path to the connected Wasabi Ball.

Use the default prefix

  1. If access to Wasabi Ball requires authentication, click Change Network Credentials, then complete the Add/Edit Network Path.
  2. Create a new backup plan that includes all initial backup data, then run it.

Do not enable the Enable Encryption option

  1. Wait until the backup plan (the first run is always a full backup) completes.

Make sure the backup plan is completed without errors and warnings

Ship Wasabi Ball Back to Wasabi

Return Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance to Wasabi.

After receiving the Wasabi Ball Transfer Appliance, Wasabi uploads your data to your Wasabi storage bucket(s), notifies you, and securely erases the Wasabi ball.

Sync Repository

Note that the Wasabi storage account must be already added to your storage account list

As a notification from Wasabi arrives that your data was moved to Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, perform a repository sync.

Continue With Incremental Backups

Once the repository is synchronized, the initial backup with the help of Wasabi Ball is completed.

Now you can edit the backup plans created for Wasabi Ball data seeding to continue incremental backups. To do this, edit the plan (or plans if you created several ones) and change the backup destination from the local destination to the Wasabi one.
