How bandwidth limits work for computers
Bandwidth limits for computers help distribute available bandwidth among computers running backup plans simultaneously. Bandwidth is managed separately for local and remote backup plans.
How bandwidth is calculated and distributed
When a backup plan starts or finishes, Managed Backup checks the computer's bandwidth limit type (local or cloud). A bandwidth group is defined by the following parameters:
- Computers with bandwidth limit enabled
- Bandwidth limit schedule
- Bandwidth limit type (local or remote)
If a bandwidth group is defined, Managed Backup calculates the number of computers in the group that are currently running backup plans and recalculates the bandwidth allocation accordingly. It then notifies all computers in the group of the updated bandwidth settings.
When checking the group, Managed Backup determines each computer's state. Offline computers are excluded from the bandwidth calculation.
Multiple backup plans running on the same computer count as one running backup for bandwidth calculation purposes.
If the number of concurrent backups across different computers in a bandwidth group would result in an allocation below the minimum bandwidth of 100 KB/s, Managed Backup notifies the Agent to apply the bandwidth limitation.
How Backup Agents apply bandwidth settings
The Agent applies the received bandwidth limit for a limited period, such as 30 minutes. If it does not receive updated bandwidth settings within that period, it reverts to its standard bandwidth settings.
Managed Backup sends updated bandwidth settings to each computer at least once every 30 minutes to ensure that the configured limits remain in effect.
If a computer runs local and remote backup plans simultaneously, it receives separate bandwidth settings for each rbackup route type in separate messages.
As the bandwidth calculations are done, a proper value is returned to a running plan and all other plans receive a new bandwidth value. Once a plan terminates or fails, the number of running plans is updated, and new bandwidth values are recalculated and sent to all currently running plans.
Thus, if the bandwidth is, for example, 500 kB/s and 5 backup plans are running, the bandwidth is divided as follows: 100 kB/s for each plan. Once one backup plan terminates, the bandwidth will be divided between 4 plans and the bandwidth per plan will be 125 kB/s
It is not recommended to set the bandwidth value lower than 250 kB/s since connection issues are likely to occur
Set Bandwidth Limit
To configure bandwidth settings for a computer, proceed as follows:
- Open the Management Console.
- In the Computers menu or on the Backup > Computers page, find the computer you want to configure the Agent settings for.
- Click the computer name or the configure icon to open the side panel.
- Turn on Bandwidth schedule to apply bandwidth limits according to a defined weekly schedule.
- Create a schedule for bandwidth limits. Set the bandwidth limits separately for cloud and local destinations.
- You can configure the cloud and local bandwidth limits separately. Turn on the limit you need.
- Once you are done, click Save.
