Restore Image to an Original Instance or an Instance With Similar Hardware Configuration in Case of HDD Failure
It is recommended to make a USB drive/ISO image file for each physical server or a group of servers with similar hardware that are managed by the same user. Consider, the bootable USB drive/ISO image file will contain a pre-boot environment only. Backup data for restore will be retrieved from backup storage specified in your image-based backup plan for the image you are planning to restore.
In such cases you will need to format or replace the hard disk drive, then boot from the prepared USB drive/ ISO image and pull the image data back from the cloud backup storage using the built-in user credentials.
Restore an Image to Another Hardware Configuration
This restore takes more time, so take that into account to meet the RTO requirements:
- Install a clean operating system (same type recommended) on new hardware.
- Install Backup Agent.
- Create a bootable USB drive/ISO image file.
Or:
- Download any specific drivers that are required for the new hardware (e.g. for a RAID controller) on any machine (Windows 10 is preferred) with the MSP360 Backup.
- Make sure that the Backup Agent is registered for the correct Management Console user
- Create a USB drive/ISO image file including the downloaded drivers.
- The restore procedure will be the same as for the first scenario above.
Bare-Metal Restore Example
- Once the Bootable USB drive is created, boot the required machine from it (in the example virtual machine is used).
- Click Bare Metal Recovery.
- In the File menu, select Online Backup Account, then log in with the required MBS user credentials.
- Once you are logged in, switch to the Backup Storage tab, find the required image-based backup, right-click on it, then select Restore.
- In the Restore Wizard, select the required partitions and their restore points:
- Finish the restore wizard, then run the restore plan.
Offline Bare Metal Restore from a Local Storage
Bare metal restore in offline mode is possible but only from a local storage - for example, from attached physical or virtual hard drive, local network share, or USB-connected storage media.
In order to use offline mode as intended, consider the following actions:
- Boot from the Bootable USB device;
- Click "Bare Metal Recovery" from Boot Menu. If you receive a connection error - dismiss it;
- Click "Bare Metal Recovery" again. Now you should see a login prompt;
- Click "Offline Mode":
- Add local storage containing the backup data as a storage account;
- Proceed with the rest of the restore procedure as in the example above.
